THE THIRD CRITERIA NECESSARY FOR AN ADHD DIAGNOSIS
The following information is taken from my book “Own Your ADHD – Discover Your True Potential.”
The three criteria for an ADHD diagnosis are, impulsivity, distractibility and hyperactivity. One of the criteria for your ADHD diagnosis is “distractibility” Do you find it hard to focus? Can you focus on boring tasks as well as interesting tasks? Do you find yourself getting distracted in mid-conversation? Do you forget what you were going to say – a lot? We all have a bit of this in our lives. However does this interfere with your life to the point that it is a daily challenge, and is holding you back? Has this challenge been around for ,well, a very long time?
In my book “Own your ADHD – Discover Your True Potential,” I discuss the three types of focus that you need for your life success.
Hypo-focus is the ability to see the big picture, and jump from one task to the next in rapid fire succession.Emergency personnel employ hypo-focusing to move easily from one task to another, while keeping the big picture in view. Hypo-focusing helps to sustain focus on many things at once without feeling overwhelmed. You need this skill in your life.
The drawback is that when bored or unmotivated, you might jump from one task to the next, often without completing the first. You may get restless and irritable.
Hyper-focus is the ability to shut out all outside stimulus and focus for very long periods of time. This is a massive strength if used correctly. Channel this trait into the right profession to suit your skills. Neurosurgeons, caring professionals, theatre and arts professionals and wilderness guides all use hyper-focus to their advantage.
The downside of hyper-focus is being able to shift focus from hyper-focus mode to regular focus mode. That is a challenge, yet it is a skill that you can learn.
You need the skill of hyper-focus so that you can study/work for long periods of time, and get work done! You can train your mind to focus for longer periods of time. Use short bursts of energy to get a job done. Remember to focus on one piece of work at a time, to gain inner peace.
You also need to be able to selectively focus, meaning being able to focus on your tasks even when there are distractions around you. This can really pull you down. Being able to filter out the noise and distractions from around you and continue to focus on your task is very important for your life success. Remember it is a skill that can be learned!
Disctractibility has its upside as well.
